Kuala Lumpur

As promised many many weeks ago, I have FINALLY caught up with the missing Kuala Lumpur post! We’ve been enjoying Thailand so much that it has actually been difficult to keep up with the posts of the things we’ve been up to and it’s difficult to actually find the time!
Hands down the best thing we did in KL was the Batu Caves. Accessible by a short train journey from the central station, Batu Caves is a series of Hindu shrines located in caves at the foot of a large rocky hill. Most of these require an entrance fee, but the main attraction is the cave located at the top of the rock. You have to climb 272 steps but the view and summit shrine are pretty impressive, and make Batu Caves one of the biggest Hindu shrines in Malaysia. One thing to be aware of is the pretty aggressive monkeys which yank anything shiny or plastic out of your hands. We actually saw a guy get bitten and were horrified when he started sucking the wound instead of immediately descending to the hospital for rabies shots. We personally didn’t have any problems with them but I think that’s mainly because we weren’t attempting to take selfies.

No trip to KL would be complete without a trip to the world famous Petronas Towers. We stopped by after dark to make sure they were fully lit up in all their glory and stood with the many other tourists at the bottom trying to take a horribly angled selfie to prove we were there. The base of the towers also includes colourful water fountains and a small park, with space to sit and relax. One of the things we didn’t realise before we got there is that the base of the towers is actually a super high end mall where you can look longingly at beautiful Prada handbags and Hugo Boss suits long into the night.
Having lusted after some martial things way out of our price range, we headed to Petaling Street, a warren of stalls famous for their Proda bags and Higo Bass suits, along with every other kind of fake and counterfeit goods you can imagine. It was fun browsing the offerings that ranged from make-up to luggage, belts to t-shirts and everything in between.
The last notable thing about our trip was our hostel and the North Indian restaurant that it flanked. The food was absolutely delicious and it meant that we ate dhal and roti for breakfast every morning – perfect!
